Welcome to Lafayette, Indiana.
Lafayette is a city located in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 56,397. Lafayette's sister city, West Lafayette, is home to Purdue University and as a result much of the activity in the city is centered around the University, whose students make up a sizeable portion of its population.
Lafayette is also the home of the Subaru Indiana Automotive plant, a producer of Subaru and Isuzu vehicles.
Lafayette is located northwest of Indianapolis along Interstate 65 on the banks of the Wabash River near Tippecanoe Battlefield. William Digby platted Lafayette in May of 1825 and named it after the Marquis de Lafayette, the French hero of the Revolutionary War.
The City of Lafayatte has been home to several notabe citizens, including Ten-fold Olympic champion Ray Ewry, Guns n' Roses singer Axl Rose, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, actor, director, and producer Sydney Pollack, actor Adam Vanderwielen, Shannon Hoon of the band Blind Melon and actress Embeth Davidtz.
Downtown remains the heart of our community with its active businesses, inviting public areas and community festivities. The beautiful turn-of-the-century architecture as illustrated by our 1885 courthouse, businesses, historic neighborhoods, and churches make this a wonderful place to walk and explore.

Lafayette is a great city with a strong tradition of civic participation in elections, neighborhood associations, and civic and arts groups. Purdue University is a coeducational, state-assisted system in Indiana. Founded in 1869 and named after benefactor John Purdue, the University is one of the nation's leading research institutions with a reputation for excellent and affordable education. Building upon historical strengths in engineering and agriculture, the West Lafayette Campus now offers nearly 6,700 courses in more than 200 specializations in the schools of Agriculture, Consumer and Family Sciences, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Liberal Arts, Management, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences, Science, Technology, and Veterinary Medicine. Programs of graduate study and research leading to advanced degrees come under the jurisdiction of the Graduate School.
Children always enjoy Wolf Park in Lafayette. Along with research and seminars on wolf behavior, particularly reproductive and inter-pack social behavior, Wolf Park provides interpretive programs to school groups throughout the year by prearrangement.
The Columbian Park Zoo, located in Lafayette, is the oldest zoo in Indiana. It is home to a wide variety of animals fromm red-eyed treefrogs to spider monkeys to snow leopards.
